Salt Lake City's first pioneer burial site was in block 49 on 200 West between 300 and 400 South. Beginning in 1847, at least 32 pioneers were buried in that location. Lost to memory for decades, the site was discovered during construction work in 1986. Not all of the remains could be identified on the basis of existing records. The pioneers were reburied here, overlooking the valley they came to settle. The large grave markers represent the adults. The smaller markers represent the children and infants.

Did you know?

The pioneer burial site was on top of a Native American burial ground. While excavating block 49, archaeologists found the bodies of three Native Americans and two pit houses used by the ancient Fremont Indians who predated the indigenous tribes of Utah.
